July 2010

Support Group Meeting

Hi Everyone,

Our meeting this month is July the 22nd as there are 5 Thursday’s this month.

We have an outstanding guest for our speaker this month, Roy McCoy. Roy is the President of the Southwest Amputee Golf Association. He is a Viet Nam Vet and has been very involved with working with physically challenged children for many years and has participated in numerous golf clinics all over the southwest. His topic for the night is: “Golf Therapy”—“What we try to teach is that simply by going in the back yard or to a driving range, a person can improve their balance, stamina, flexibility and overall health using a golf club and some balls. Many of us are unable do Pilates or the 10-Minute Magnum Force workout, go jogging or do karate, etc., but we can all swing a golf club, even from a sitting position. It is low impact and stress free exercise. It might even lead to them to taking up golf. Even if it doesn’t though, it is still a good way to improve your health and your heart. Besides the great topic and information, Roy is just about the nicest guy you could ever meet. He is an above knee amputee. Don’t miss Roy. You will enjoy him immensely.

We always have a little something to snack on and a cool beverage.

NEWS and EVENTS!!!

Let’s go Bowling!!! We have our bowling date set for July 24th at 4:00 p.m. at Dart Bowl at 5700 Grover

(# is 452-2518). This is right behind McCallum High School in Austin. Everyone loved this place when we went in March. They have good food and the price to bowl is a lot more reasonable. Come and bowl a game or just watch and laugh at the rest of us.  J  This is a lot of fun. Also, you can bowl out of a wheelchair—so no excuses for not participating. This will be our activity for the summer so come on out and join us--Good way to have a little exercise, socialize and have a good laugh.

Everybody caught some fish and the food was fantastic. We would especially like to thank The Austin Christian Bass Club for their participation for the 7th straight year! Also, Pro Bass Master Angler Sandi Karnes came all the way from Lake Livingston for the 2nd year to join us. Thank you so much to all of our anglers.

Our Support Group August trip to Bob Bullock Museum and then to IMAX theatre was a great day. Everyone enjoyed the museum and the movie.

PEER VISITING

The Round Rock Amputee Support Group Peer Visitation Program is strong. We have 9 ACA certified Peer visitors and many more qualified visitors from personal experience. We can also provide a pre-amputation visit if you find yourself in this situation. Knowledge can often help ease anxiety and possibly lessen some of the stress of facing an amputation.

Please let us know if we can assist you and your family or if you know someone who needs a peer visit and we will be there for you.

INSURANCE PARITY FOR PROSTHETIC COVERAGE: Great News!!

The Round Rock Amputee Support Group has been involved in the statewide grass-roots movement to improve insurance coverage for prosthetics in Texas for the last 4 years.

HB806 HAS BEEN SIGNED INTO LAW BY GOVERNOR PERRY!! This is a great day for Texas Amputees.  If you have insurance, you will no longer be surprised by caps and lifetime caps when you go to get your first prosthesis. You will be provided the same percentages that you have in your policy overall. It goes into affect in September.

Also, there is a Federal Mandate being presented at the present .

Many people have worked far this over the last 4 years.

Congratulations and thank you to all of you that have participated, whether it was physically being there, or all the emails and calls you have made on behalf of amputees across our great State. This is very exciting.

Many thanks to all of you who have spent their time and dedication working toward Prosthetic Parity in Texas.

Our Round Rock Amputee Support Group was represented well.

We've been trying to build a page of our Support Group members with a pic and bio. I have received 2 bio's, so they will be added soon, Please send me a small bio about yourself. This will give other amputees a chance to get to know us and maybe connect with another amputee of their amputation level or circumstance that resulted in becoming an amputee. Thanks!!

Thank you to all of our members for your continued support for our Amputee Support Group!
