The Round Rock Amputee Support Group Meeting

January 26, 2012

Round Rock Medical Center ClassRoom 1 (Right past the gift center behind registration desk)

2400 Round Rock Hwy ( Hwy 620) Round Rock, TX

10 Year Anniversary of Round Rock Amputee Support Group!

Hi to all of you,

I hope your New Year is off to a good start!

It is time to get back in the groove with our meetings and activities.

Our meeting this month is January the 26th at 7:00 p.m. at Round Rock Medical Center in Education Room 3. This is the smaller room behind the gift center. The address is 2400 Round Rock Avenue (620).

We are happy to have Aaron Foreman, MSPT, CPO, as our speaker this month. The title for his presentation is “Sports and Prosthetics for the Amputee”. Aaron will discuss prosthetic technologies and adaptions needed for an amputee to return to various sports. Examples and explanations of prosthetic equipment will be discussed and available to see.

I know you will enjoy Aaron’s presentation and will give us a chance to see some of the new technology available and talk with some amputees that are competing in different sports.

Aaron’s presentation will also be a good influence on many of us to exercise and become better “walkers” and healthier as the new year begins.

I would like to announce this month it is our 10 Year Anniversary for the Round Rock Amputee Support Group! I want to take this opportunity to thank  each of you that have participated in all our meetings and activities from the beginning of the group to the present. Together we have made a difference for many of our fellow amputees and I know we will continue to do so in the future.

Activities: We will choose an activity for February at the meeting so come with some ideas! Then our next outing will be FISHING!!!! Yeaaaa!  I’m in the process of getting the details firmed up.

I hope the New Year is beginning well for you with good health and good things in your life. Please come and join us for a great meeting—Aaron as our speaker—new amputees looking for info and someone to identify with—planning our next activity—some good socializing—and of course, a little snack! There is a little something for all of us to gain and give.

See you the 26th. Call or write me if you have any questions or need more info.

Your friend,

Frieda

Activities

Our trip to Dart Bowl in August was a big success. We had 15 total bowling and enjoying the afternoon. We will continue to have this a couple of

times a year as everyone seems to enjoy it so much.

Extremity Games in New Braunfels June 24-25th
These games were a big success this year. Several of our local amputees participated and placed as winners. They have extended

their clinics for people to try different sports so watch for this event again next year to join in the fun—Cycling, wakeboarding,

kayaking, skateboarding and rock climbing were the competitions. www.extremitygames.com

Round Rock Amputee Support Group Fishing Day May 2011

Round Rock Amputee Support Group

Our 8th annual Round Rock Amputee Support Group fishing day was May 14th at Lake Bastrop North Shore.

We had 20 amputees plus their guests, family and friends and 17 bass boats—around 50 people total. This was our

biggest turn out we have ever had. What a wonderful day!
Everybody was grinnin’, catchin’ fish, riding in the boat, enjoying the outdoors, making friends and then topped it

off with a great potluck picnic!! Mmmmm, yummy! Thanks to all of you for participating.
We would like to especially thank the Austin Christian Bass Club, Kris and Matt McClendon, Brian, Curtis and Laurie Gipson,

and Richard Chesebro for bringing their beautiful boats plus all their fishing gear. Thanks also to the LCRA and

Texas Parks and Wildlife for their continued support for our event year after year. Always thanks to

Orthotic Prosthetic Technologies for their support. Also, thanks to Sean Spangler for taking photos and

video. (www.atmosink.com)

Some of our activities over the months !!!

In March 2011 we went to play pool at Slick Willie's. We had a great time and a good crowd.

Our Holiday Party for 2010 was a big success. We had 30 people attend.

We had dinner at Carino's--lots of good conversation, laughing and great food!

4TH ANNUAL SUPPORT GROUP HALLOWEEN PARTY October 30, 2010

Our Halloween party on October 30th at my friend Goldie’s house was a great night.

Our potluck dinner was fantastic and we listened to some good music and had a great night of socializing. Goldie's house is a lot of fun--toys

everywhere.

Amputee Tennis Clinic October 16, 2010

The tennis clinic below was a huge success. We had 12 amputees and two wheelchair players, many guests with family and friends. Robin Burton,

the director of OPAF, said "this is the most successful adult tennis clinic we have had". We were all thrilled and I can't tell you how much fun we all

had. Pictures posted soon. Amputees from 80 years young to 20 participated. Great day!! We will definitely do it again next year. We had Wimbeldon

champ Dennis Ralston playing and instructing as well. He is a new amputee and we were so honored to have him at our tennis clinic. We want to

thank Circle C Tennis Club and especially Fernando Velasco, the tennis pro at the club for hosting our event for the 2nd straight year. What a fantastic

event for all of us.

Our Support Group August trip to Bob Bullock Museum and then to IMAX theatre was a great day. Everyone enjoyed the museum and the movie.

Thanks to all of you that attend our get together's. All of you make our group successful! The past two years

we have had some awesome events and outings.

PEER VISITING

The Round Rock Amputee Support Group Peer Visitation Program is strong. We have 8 ACA certified Peer visitors and many more qualified visitors

from personal experience. We can also provide a pre-amputation visit if you find yourself in this situation. Knowledge can often help ease anxiety and

possibly lessen some of the stress of facing an amputation.

Please let us know if we can assist you and your family or if you know someone who needs a peer visit and we will be there for you.

INSURANCE PARITY FOR PROSTHETIC COVERAGE: Great News!!

The Round Rock Amputee Support Group has been involved in the statewide grass-roots movement to improve insurance coverage for prosthetics in

Texas for the last 4 years.

HB806 HAS BEEN SIGNED INTO LAW BY GOVERNOR PERRY!! This is a great day for Texas Amputees. If you have insurance, you will no longer be

surprised by caps and lifetime caps when you go to get your first prosthesis. You will be provided the same percentages that you have in your policy

overall. It goes into affect in September.

Also, there is a Federal Mandate being presented at the present .

Many people have worked far this over the last 4 years.

Congratulations and thank you to all of you that have participated, whether it was physically being there, or all the emails and calls you have made on

behalf of amputees across our great State. This is very exciting.

Many thanks to all of you who have spent their time and dedication working toward Prosthetic Parity in Texas.

Our Round Rock Amputee Support Group was represented well.

We've been trying to build a page of our Support Group members with a pic and bio. I have received 2 bio's, so they will be added

soon, Please send me a small bio about yourself. This will give other amputees a chance to get to know us and maybe connect

with another amputee of their amputation level or circumstance that resulted in becoming an amputee. Thanks!!
